This might seem out of place, because Josh Gad has never written a screenplay before, although he has written for his shows “1600 Penn” and “Central Park.” But let’s not forget that Gad appeared in the role of William Shakespeare last year “History of the World Part II”, the sequel series from Hulu to the parody of Mel Brooks’ historical anthology “History of the World, Part I”. There’s a good chance he made the right connections to get Mel Brooks to agree to make a “Spaceballs” sequel happen during the production of that show, if he hadn’t already had the opportunity to nurture that opportunity beforehand.
Also, let’s not forget that Gad should have been I’m working on the reboot/that legacy of “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” of some kind. That means Gad may also have had a chance to connect with that franchise’s star, Rick Moranis, who played the villainous Dark Helmet in “Spaceballs.” Moranis actually once had his own idea for a “Spaceballs” sequel., which was supposed to be titled “Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II,” but that never came to fruition either. Of course, if a “Spaceballs” sequel followed in the footsteps of the “Star Wars” sequels, Moranis wouldn’t need to appear in the film as Dark Helmet (although he once reprized the role on “The Goldbergs.”“), but Gad’s potential connection to him makes this possibility more likely.
