Relive his performance in the sports biopic MaidanAjay Devgn is gearing up for another film on the world of athletics. This time he portrays Palvankar Balu, a pioneering cricketer who is considered to be India’s first Dalit player. The news was shared by film producer Preeti Sinha on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on 29 May 2023.

Sinha’s statement hinted at a joint effort between him, Devgn and director Tigmanshu Dhulia. “We are producing Baloo Palwankar’s story based on @Ram_Guha sir’s book ‘A Corner Of A Foreign Field’,” he wrote, expressing his intention to bring this cricketing tale to the big screen.

Filming is expected to begin in late 2023. The project is reportedly inspired by historian Ramchandra Guha’s book which explores the life and struggle of Palvankar Balu. Born into a Dalit community, Balu’s journey began humbly as a bouncer at the Pune Cricket Club. However, his talent and dedication shone through, leading to his selection at the Hindu Gymkhana in 1896. Guha’s book supposedly explores the challenges Balu faced throughout his career due to caste discrimination.

Ajay Devgn’s upcoming slate also boasts of Neeraj Pandey Auron Mein Kahan Dum Ta Starring Tabu. It also has a Rohit Shetty action extravaganza Singham again.
