Eddie Murphy Returns for Netflix Sequel

Ultimately, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” is… good? I guess? I wish I could tell you it was either a fun, hilarious movie or a total failure, because then my job would be easier. Instead, this is a more frustrating kind of movie: It’s mediocre. It’s neither truly good nor truly bad, it just exists, goes through the motions, and tries to get by with Murphy’s considerable charm. More often than not, it feels a lot like a Netflix movie, and I mean that in a derogatory sense. Every once in a while, a Netflix original movie, usually helmed by a master filmmaker, delivers the goods (you know, like “The Irishman”). But that seems to be the exception, not the rule. More often than not, Netflix movies are visually bland and dull; they feel like what they are: TV movies. “Beverly Hills Cop II” may not be anyone’s idea of a masterpiece, but you have to admit it. watched awesome. No one will say the same thing about “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”

I imagine your mileage will vary. If you’re just looking to see Murphy return to a familiar role and have some fun, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” might be for you. Even though this movie is mediocre, it’s still fun to watch Eddie Murphy do his thing, and there are moments here where he genuinely seems to be having fun, and that can be infectious. So maybe that’s enough to satisfy. Or, when you sit down and turn on Netflix to watch this movie, you can make a wiser choice and just watch “Dolemite is My Name.” It’ll be a much better use of your time, I promise.

/Movie Rating: 5 out of 10
