Code Geass New Season Explained

Spoilers for “Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture” begin here.

“Code Geass” was already a franchise Before “Rozé of the Recapture”. In 2017-2018, Sunrise produced a trilogy of films that told the story of “Lelouch of the Rebellion” in six hours instead of 20. This resulted in some changes to the story, but the biggest was a new epilogue film: 2019’s “Lelouch of the Re;surrection”, which continued the films’ alternate timeline. “Rozé”, in turn, is a sequel to that film.

“Rozé of the Recapture” opens by recapping the results of the original “Code Geass,” in which Britannia fell and fragmented, with most of its old territories joining the new United Federation of Nations. But three years after “Re;,” the narrator tells us, disgruntled British nobles and soldiers invaded Hokkaido (the northernmost island of Japan), erected an energy barrier around the island, and declared themselves the Neo-Britannic Empire.

So the defeated evil empire is back, but in a diminished state? It seems very similar to the First Order to me. As for the heroes, Rozé is introduced as a mercenary working alongside her older brother Ash, a Knightmare pilot. Like Lelouch in the original, they join forces with some brave Japanese rebels working against the Britannians.

Then, in a twist in the first episode, it turns out that “Rozé” is just a disguise for the Japanese princess Sakuya Sumeragi. Neo-Britannia has stolen something precious from the princess and she is working to to reconquer them. Sakuya is not just a masked royalty like Lelouch was, she shares his affinity for chess, his quick-thinking puppet mind, his loyalty-inducing Geass and even his appearanceShe is the Rey (Daisy Ridley) to Lelouch’s (Mark Hamill) Luke.

So far, two of the 12 episodes of “Rozé of the Recapture” have been released in the US. No characters from the original “Code Geass” have appeared. Stillbut I think it’s just a matter of time.
