Not only did cricket fans celebrate India’s historic T20 World Cup win, it also resonated with celebrities. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh took to social media to express his admiration for the team, especially veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who announced their retirement from T20I cricket after the win.

In an emotional Instagram story, Ranveer hailed Kohli as “the king who will bring down the anchor”, acknowledging his incredible T20 career that culminated in a World Cup triumph. He also praised other key players like Akshar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya.
The tribute did not stop there. Ranveer also acknowledged the guidance of Indian coach and former cricketer Rahul Dravid. He called Dravid ‘The Wall’ – a fitting title for a legendary cricketer known for his resilience – and said: “What a fitting tribute to one of the greatest champions of Indian cricket.”
Kohli, clearly emotional after the victory, confirmed his decision to retire to broadcasters. “This being my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” he said. He explained the pressure and the satisfaction of winning and said, “One day you will feel that you can’t get runs and it will happen, God is great. (It’s) just a case of now or never. It was my last T20 game for India, we wanted to lift this trophy .
The news of Kohli’s retirement was not entirely unexpected. He revealed, “Yes, it was an open secret (to retire). I wasn’t going to announce it even if I lost. It’s time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward.”
After Kohli’s announcement, Indian captain Rohit Sharma also surprised everyone by retiring from T20I cricket. Rohit, who played a crucial role in India’s victory, assured fans that he would continue to lead the team in ODIs and Tests.
“It was my last (T20I) game as well,” Rohit said at the post-match press conference. He added, “There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the trophy. I wanted it so much. It is very difficult to put into words, it was A very emotional moment in my life.
Ranveer’s tribute also acknowledged Rohit’s contribution and his emotional journey towards this World Cup win. The retirements of Kohli and Sharma mark a significant change in Indian cricket. While both players will continue to contribute in other formats, their absence leaves a giant void in the T20 arena. However, as Kohli himself stated, the time has come for the next generation to step up and carry forward the legacy.
