James Gunn says there are two different Groots in Guardians of the Galaxy

For many, of course, this is nothing new. Gunn once said in a now-deleted 2018 Tweet that Baby Groot, as he appeared in “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol.2” he was not a resurrected Groot, but should be seen as Groot’s son. The issue was probably confusing because both characters had the same name, were played by the same actor, still spoke only one line of dialogue (“I am Groot”), and had basically the same personality. Baby Groot was a new character, but not in any noticeable way.

In his commentary on “Vol. 3”, Gunn reiterated:

“Here we see Groot reconstitute himself. He grows back over the course of the film. Groot, of course, is now a young adult Groot. We sometimes call him ‘Swole Groot.’ It’s Baby Groot, in a youthful, adult state. And I think here we really start to see that this Groot is not the same Groot from the first movie. A lot of people believe that the first Groot has just been reborn in this new form. Um, he’s not so. This is a completely different Groot from the first Groot.”

Totally different.

Gunn then hinted that he had written a complicated backstory for Groot and that he had solid narrative reasons for replacing Groot with an exact duplicate. In Marvel Comics, Groot first appeared in 1960, although Gunn’s film version was lifted from a 2006 reinvention of the character.
