Known for his unconventional cinema, Anurag Kashyap was one of the first filmmakers to explore the world of OTT with Netflix India’s first original web series Sacred Games starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The filmmaker recently discussed the evolution of the platform, arguing that the medium has undergone massive changes and is on the verge of transforming into television. He explained that it is controlled by an algorithm that prevents many creators from exploring and experimenting with their content.
Anurag Kashyap explains why the ‘golden age’ of OTT has passed; Says “OTT is starting to turn into TV”
Talking to Radio Nasha, Anurag Kashyap said, “I think we have passed the golden age of OTT. Now OTT is starting to turn into TV. Longform storytelling has always had potential, but now it’s not dictated by quality, it’s dictated by an algorithm. And that’s where the problem lies.” He compared it to television and added, “TRPs started deciding what kind of television to make. When the shows were aired on Doordarshan, they had a certain quality. Before they need new subscribers, they will experiment with new things. When they run out of it, it turns into a TV. This is a cycle. “
Further noting that he has been here for around 32 years, Anurag continued, “Now the same multiplexes will play the same movie on four screens. They don’t support the movies they originally made. When the studios came in, they also made new movies, but then they started feeding the same formula.”
He talked about the time when he created Sacred Games with Vikramaditya Motwane and said, “Vikram and I did the first Netflix India show and this kind of sensitivity and support, we will not get again. Because this sensitivity has changed. The shows department is now run by people with no background in cinema. And they came from television. So their sensibility is television. Any creative person will tell you that when you’re dealing with them, sometimes you hit a wall with your head.”
“I don’t think I can do the long format that I want to do. And they are afraid too. Max City is one example. An approved green-lit show that was shut down without official communication. They only want to do what their algorithm dictates,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap will currently be seen as a gray character in Disney+ Hotstar’s upcoming web series Bad Cop, featuring Gulshan Devaya in a double role with the ensemble cast.
