Tom Cruise pays homage to Edge of Tomorrow, his best science fiction film

The premise of “Edge of Tomorrow” is fun. It’s the near future and an alien species called Mimics has invaded Earth. In response, Earth combined its military forces to fight back, equipping its soldiers with oversized, super-powered exoskeletons. A public affairs officer named Cage (Cruise) is hired by the government to report on the war from the front, but refuses to do so, saying it is too dangerous. In response, he is forced to don an exoskeleton and enter the fray himself. Incredibly, he is killed in battle almost immediately.

Then he wakes up the previous morning, catapulted back in time. It doesn’t take long for Cage to discover that he’s stuck in a time loop. Every time he dies in combat, he wakes up the previous morning. After more repetitions, he becomes a more efficient fighter. To understand what’s happening, deal with the Mimics’ battlefield tactics, and become a better soldier, Cage repeatedly enlists the help of super soldier Vrataski (Blunt). He’s really awesome.

Cruise has I’ve always been positive about “Edge of Tomorrow”, and was happy to remember the wonderful time he had working on the film. He has written:

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Emily Blunt once again for being a great friend and a brilliant actress. I love her performance in this film. Her dedication. Her humor. Her vulnerability and her power. She has brought all this. […] This anniversary brings back incredible memories. My first collaboration with Doug Liman. Reuniting with the indomitable Brendan Gleeson. It’s the first time I’ve worked alongside the great Bill Paxton. His portrayal of him and the character he created left an indelible mark on this film.”

Liman would also make “American Made” with Cruise in 2017.
