“We need to view loneliness as a threat to health security.” Abramorama said, Documentary Films title Join or dieAn ominous title for a documentary, this important film focuses on the breakdown of civil society in America through the journey of a scientist. Robert Putnam (aka Bob), his study of the decline of American community illuminates a way out of the current crisis of our democracy. The film premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year and also screened at the Boston, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Tallgrass, Tucson and Denver Film Festivals. Putnam is a distinguished social scientist and Malkin Professor of Public Policy Studies at Harvard University. He describes the film as “a film about why you should join a club… and why the fate of America depends on it.” It’s an examination of how the decline of community ties holds the answer to the current crisis of our democracy. Americans are becoming increasingly lonely and less connected, which is affecting our social and mental health and more. It seems like a must-see.
